It belongs to a class of medications called leukotriene receptor antagonists, which work by blocking the action of leukotrienes, chemicals that are involved in the body's immune response. Montelukast is usually taken once a day, and it is available in several forms, including tablets, oral granules, and chewable tablets. It is typically used in people who are at least 6 months old. Some common side effects of montelukast include stomach pain, headache, and diarrhea.
