Polymyxin B

 Polymyxin B is a type of antibiotic that belongs to the polymyxin class of drugs. It is commonly used to treat infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Polymyxin B is derived from the bacterium Bacillus polymyxa, which produces several different polymyxins. These antibiotics work by binding to the lipid A portion of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, disrupting the integrity of the bacterial cell wall and leading to the death of the bacteria.

Polymyxin B is typically used to treat infections of the urinary tract, meninges (the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord), and bloodstream. It can also be used to treat infections of the eyes, such as bacterial conjunctivitis, and infections of the respiratory tract, such as pneumonia.

Polymyxin B is available in several different forms, including intravenous (IV) injection, topical ointment, and eye drops. The specific dosage and route of administration will depend on the type and severity of the infection being treated.

Polymyxin B is generally considered to be a drug of last resort, due to the potential for serious side effects. It should only be used when other antibiotics have failed or are not suitable for the infection being treated.
